National Mall deploys first propane mowers

June 25, 2013 By

The National Mall and Memorial Parks (NAMA) fired up its first alternative-fueled mowers June 24 thanks to a donation from the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC). The deployment of the propane mowers adds NAMA to the list of national parks advancing the Green Parks Plan, a National Park Service initiative to reduce dependence on foreign oil, mitigate the effects of climate change and conserve energy.

The four 72-inch and two 60-inch Exmark Lazer Z S-Series propane-fueled mowers comprise one-third of the National Mall’s mower fleet and replace diesel-fueled mowers.

PERC and Greater Washington Region Clean Cities Coalition celebrated the first use of the mowers at a ribbon-cutting event. In total, PERC’s donation amounts to about $70,000 in equipment.

LP Gas’ sister publication, Landscape Management, covered the event and filed this report.
