Propane key to lighting Sochi’s Olympic flame

February 24, 2014 By

A propane-air system was behind the Olympic cauldron and its flame during the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Algas-SDI and its parent company, Eclipse, say they provided the system that lit the cauldron. An Algas-SDI QM100 system delivered the propane-air mixture that’s required to fuel the massive flame, which an Eclipse ThermAir 200 multi-fuel burner heated. The companies’ Russian partner, Gazovik, installed the system. Algas-SDI’s Wayne Hicks commissioned the system in January. According to Algas, the equipment was rated to provide 100 million Btus per hour of a propane/air mixture, capable of consuming about 1,100 gallons of propane per hour.

interesting article, would have been great if it talked about what tanks &/or piping was used along with how much propane was consumed
