Thompson touted propane’s advantages during his first address as chairman. He spoke of gallon growth, already having challenged the industry to increase its sales volumes by 4 billion gallons over the next five years. He also related the “electrify everything” movement to a “false prophet,” uninformed about the role propane can play in the clean-air movement.

“Our fuel is clean, green and abundant – the cleanest alternative fuel known to man,” Thompson says. “I’m going to sell that message.”

Thompson has served in many capacities on the NPGA board, including as chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee and as a member of the Executive Committee.

The other 2019-20 officers confirmed at the meeting were Denis Gagne of Eastern Propane, as chairman elect; Bob Barry of Bergquist, as vice chairman; and Michelle Bimson-Maggi of AmeriGas, as treasurer.

The NPGA presented its Distinguished Service Award to Dan Myers, who rose through the ranks to become the association’s fifth CEO in 1989.

Ray Murray III of Ray Murray Inc., last year’s award winner who presented the 2019 honor, described Myers as a strong, quiet leader who gave 25 years of service to the association.

In accepting the award, Myers referenced the leaders who came before him and those who are continuing the work today to help further and protect the propane industry.

“Let us not forget the leaders and comrades who are guiding NPGA into the future and will show us the way to go,” Myers said during the presentation held at the mid-year board of directors meeting. “To them and to all of you, I thank you most sincerely for this wonderful honor.”

Other honors

Outgoing NPGA Chairman Chris Earhart of Dixie Gas & Oil presented citations to several members for their service to the industry. They went to Dan Balmer of Penn Valley Gas, Robert Blackwell of Independent Gas Co. and Bill Young of Superior Energy Systems. Dan Richardson of Conger LP Gas was named the state director of the year (Georgia).
