Jamison Walker

Company: Blossman Gas / Gordonsville, Virginia

Job title: Regional manager

Years in the propane industry: 10

How did you get your start in the propane industry?

I cut my teeth in autogas. While with Virginia Clean Cities, I was able to support the team at Alliance AutoGas in deploying vehicle conversions and refueling infrastructure throughout the Southeast. That was a neat project and, fortunately, I was able to fully immerse myself into the world of autogas, which eventually led to a position in sales.

How do you help lead your company in your current role?

I get to support a great team of people in Virginia and the surrounding areas. I enjoy complex challenges, and the propane industry is free market competition at its finest. My job is as close to running your own business without running your own business, and it’s multi-dimensional. Price is not the only deciding factor to the consumer, and when you can gain and retain customers by the customer experience, that’s the ultimate win. It takes people power, process power and vision, and that’s how I try to lead my team, in addition to a servant leadership mindset.

How can the propane industry ensure its long-term success and remain a viable energy source into the future?

I’ve learned a lot in a short amount of time, with far more to learn. One thing for sure is it starts with people. We have a great product and new innovations to make it greater, but it’s only as good as the people delivering it. We need to focus on making the industry a great place to work. If we can offer fulfilling careers, then our people will take care of the customer. That’s a win-win recipe for long-term success.

What does your generation offer to the propane industry that previous generations did not?

If I may, I’d rather flip the question. There will be many up-and-coming young people who are eager and will bring new ideas to the table. We need them and their ideas so that we can continue to evolve as an industry, innovate and prosper. However, I’d rather emphasize the ageless concepts that transcend generations. Relationships still matter. Saying what you’ll do and then doing it will always matter. Hard work, reliability and dependability will always matter as much as all of the great new ideas and perspectives that my generation and future generations will bring.

What specific technologies are you using (or plan to use) to support business operations?

We’re doubling down on tank monitors and leveraging the data to build the most productive routes possible. Now that we’ve digitized just about every facet of the operation, there are many ways that we continue to make use of the easily accessible information. Our IT department does a great job of bringing forward pertinent information in the forms of reporting and apps so that we can better manage our operations.

What propane industry associations are you involved with at the state and/or national level?

I’ve been involved with the Virginia Propane Gas Association (VAPGA) and currently serve as president. VAPGA is strong, active and composed of so many engaged members. It’s been an amazing developmental experience for me, and I’ve gained relationships that will probably last a lifetime. I’m honored to be granted the opportunity by my peers (in reality, I see them all as mentors) and especially honored that Blossman Gas sees it as time well spent.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself, your company and/or the propane industry?

I’m blessed with my wife, Kelsey, and two daughters, Rosslyn and Sylvia, and to be where I’m at with Blossman Gas. The amount of support I’ve received is far more than I can ask for, and it makes me want to support others as much as possible. I hope many others will get to share in the journey I’ve been on. Other than that, it’s been a pretty good year of sports for me. Go Seahawks, Mariners, (JMU) Dukes and (UW) Huskies! If only I could manage a winning fantasy football team. Personal aspiration – reach and place in the World Series of Poker.
