Amtrol-Alfa, Galp introduce low-carbon LPG cylinders to Portuguese market

Amtrol-Alfa, a Worthington Enterprises company and European manufacturer of steel gas cylinders, has partnered with Galp to introduce what it says are the first LPG cylinders produced using low-carbon-emission steel to the Portuguese market.
The new butane cylinders are manufactured using ArcelorMittal’s XCarb recycled and renewably produced hot-rolled steel, which delivers a carbon footprint 73 percent lower than conventional steel production methods, according to the company. Galp will distribute an initial batch of 5,000 cylinders across Portugal in the coming months.

“As a leader in LPG cylinder manufacturing, we committed ourselves to developing a steel cylinder with the lowest possible carbon footprint without relying on carbon offsetting,” says Filipe Pedrosa, general manager of Amtrol-Alfa. “Working closely with ArcelorMittal has enabled us to significantly reduce emissions associated with cylinder production while maintaining full compliance with all applicable safety and regulatory standards.”
The project is the result of a collaboration that began in 2022, when Amtrol-Alfa and ArcelorMittal started exploring ways to reduce the environmental impact of steel used in LPG cylinder manufacturing. Extensive testing and validation were carried out to ensure the material met the demanding performance and safety requirements of the LPG industry.
According to ArcelorMittal, XCarb recycled and renewably produced hot-rolled steel is manufactured using at least 75 percent recycled scrap and produced in an electric arc furnace powered by 100 percent renewable electricity. The product is supported by an independently verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).

“This collaboration demonstrates how innovation across the value chain can contribute to meaningful emissions reductions,” says Tom Van de Putte, XCarb business development manager at ArcelorMittal Europe Flat Products – CMO Industry.
The launch represents an important milestone in the LPG sector’s transition towards more sustainable products and supports the broader decarbonization objectives of both companies, according to Amtrol-Alfa.
Amtrol-Alfa is a European manufacturer of steel cylinders, lightweight steel cylinders and composite cylinders. Employing approximately 800 people and generating annual revenues of €120 million (nearly $139 million), the company supplies customers worldwide across the LPG, industrial gas and technical gas sectors.
