Dead River acquires Northern Essex Fuel Co.

February 19, 2021 By

Dead River Co., based in South Portland, Maine, grew its footprint in northern Massachusetts with the acquisition of Northern Essex Fuel Co. (NEFCO). Dead River Co. has an existing office in Bernardston, Massachusetts.

NEFCO owners Barbara and Mark Bird are retiring after 34 years of operating their family business. They wanted to sell to another family-owned company that believes in putting customer and community first, according to Dead River Co.

In 2018, Dead River Co. acquired Epping, New Hampshire-based Buxton Oil, which continues to operate independently under the name Buxton Oil. With NEFCO based only 17 miles away in Merrimac, Massachusetts, NEFCO will operate under the Buxton Oil brand.

Propane products and services, which were not available to customers through NEFCO, will be available as part of Buxton Oil’s offerings, notes Buxton Oil General Manager Jon Drabik. He and his team are honored to have been selected to carry on NEFCO’s “tradition of responsive deliveries, competitive pricing, and caring customer service,” adds Drabik.

The acquisition of NEFCO continues Dead River Co.’s growth in the Northeast. Most recently, the company acquired the propane, heating oil and service business of Fortier & Son, based in Somersworth, New Hampshire.
