Empire Gas Co. and Liquilux Gas Corp. organized two brigades to assist victims of an earthquake that rocked southwestern Puerto Rico on Jan. 7.

The magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck south of the island in the early morning near an Empire Gas propane terminal.

“Fortunately, everything is in working order,” reports Mara González, business development manager at Empire Gas.

In the aftermath of the quake, the San Juan-based company bolstered its safety measures and set out to help others as seismic activity continued. The company’s executives and employees donated first aid supplies, as well as 20-pound propane tanks to families in need.

The vast majority of Empire Gas employees live in the northern part of the island, González says. She says that a few of the employees who live near the Empire Gas southwestern terminal lost their houses.

“We’re providing help and many different organizations and municipalities have created refuge centers for the most affected,” González says. “Most importantly, we must stay mentally strong, especially those in the south, because the earthquakes will continue for a bit longer, experts say.”

Along with gathering and donating supplies and supporting their own employees, Empire Gas and Liquilux Gas organized two brigades to aid the most affected areas and communities in southern Puerto Rico. The brigades visited the towns of Peñuelas, Ponce and Guanica following the quake to distribute supplies.

Empire Gas is a full-service propane company, serving Puerto Rico’s propane industry since 1967. Its more than 500 full-time employees serve clients in the commercial, industrial, public and residential sectors, as well as residences across the Caribbean.
