SEPATEC initiates driver training program
The Southeast Propane Alliance Technical Education Center (SEPATEC) launched a new program to provide comprehensive entry-level driver training (ELDT) that leads to a Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL-B).
The program adheres to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations and guidelines to ensure high-quality education and preparation.
The curriculum encompasses theory training, behind-the-wheel training and testing requirements, equipping participants with the necessary skills for success in the propane industry. Participants will receive instruction in CDL-B driver’s theory, pre-trip and post-trip inspections and practical skills such as backup maneuvers, alley docking and a road course.
The training also includes hazmat theory sessions, which are essential for the final hazmat exam at the department of motor vehicles as mandated by the federal government.
“If you’re looking for an opportunity to drive a CDL truck and begin immediate employment, SEPATEC offers professional CDL-B and hazardous material education, hands-on training and testing that prepares students to earn a CDL-B license and hazmat endorsement in one week,” says John Peña, SEPATEC’s director of education.
SEPATEC is an educational institution that provides comprehensive training and education for the propane industry. Based in Graham, North Carolina, SEPATEC was established by the members of the Southeast Propane Alliance (SEPA).
“The SEPATEC CDL-B program is hands down the quickest and most cost-efficient way for SEPA companies to get their employees their CDL-B with hazmat endorsement,” says John Jessup, SEPA president and CEO.
Expansion plans
Initially available exclusively to SEPA members and affiliates, SEPATEC plans to expand the program to a broader audience, filling a critical gap in training resources.
“With increasing regulations, our industry members have found a lack of CDL-B training and credentialing options,” says David Boyd, SEPATEC advisory committee chair and manager at Payne Oil. “However, because of their vision and investment in SEPATEC, the facility and personnel infrastructure were in place to develop a program to fill that gap. We anticipate a continual high demand for this training.”
The program has a minimum age requirement of 21 years old and accommodates a maximum of five participants per class per week.
Administrative preparations include acquiring:
- Medical examiner’s certificate.
- State CDL permit.
- State driver’s license.
Sign-up details
The program fee is $3,400. Individual participants must pay the full amount, while companies can arrange invoicing. Training sessions run from Monday to Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except on weeks that contain federal holidays.
SEPATEC appointed Kimberly Moser as the program’s new instructor.
