Bergquist celebrates former employee’s lifesaving organ donation journey
As National Organ Donor Day approaches on Feb. 14, equipment distributor Bergquist shares a story of organ donation within its own extended family.
Don Heller, a former long-time employee of Bergquist, recently underwent a successful kidney transplant thanks to a courageous donation from his daughter, Katie Heller.

Don was first diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in his 40s – a result of a congenital birth defect. For decades, he managed the mounting fatigue and joint pain associated with the condition. By his 60s, the situation had become critical, and a transplant was his only path forward. Despite the urgency, Don was initially hesitant to ask his own child for such a significant sacrifice.
“I think any dad would be reluctant to ask his daughter for an organ donation,” Don shares. However, for Katie, the choice was clear from the start. “As scared as I was for that moment, it really wasn’t a hard decision at all to say ‘yes,'” she says.
Following a successful surgery in late 2025, Don is now on a path of recovery defined by joy and gratitude. The experience has not only bonded the Heller family in an “indescribable” way but has also ignited in Bergquist a mission to raise awareness for others still waiting on the transplant list, according to the company.
“Don has always been a valued member of the Bergquist family and seeing him receive this second chance at life is truly moving,” says Lauren Clark, president and CEO of Bergquist. “His journey, fueled by Katie’s incredible compassion, reminds us all of the power of human connection. At Bergquist, we celebrate Don’s resilience and Katie’s bravery, and we hope their story inspires others to consider the lifesaving impact of organ donation.”
The Heller family’s story highlights a critical need. While 90 percent of adults support organ donation, only 60 percent are registered, according to organdonor.gov. Don and Katie hope that by sharing their journey, they can encourage others to register as donors and help increase that number.
National Organ Donor Day is observed annually on Feb. 14. Bergquist encourages its employees, partners and the propane industry community to learn more about the donation process and the legacy of hope it creates.
