There is an expiration date on nearly everything. Milk, cottage cheese, car insurance, life in general. But there is one thing that does not expire – curiosity.

Every single day, something is presented to me that I do not know much about. World events, medical breakthroughs, military tech. And I find myself searching for information to learn more about the topic.

I had a recent conversation about leadership books I hadn’t heard of. After doing some research and reading excerpts of the books, I found that the content was interesting and downloaded them in order to satisfy my curiosity bug.

It is all right to make the statement, “I don’t know, but I will find out and get back to you.” In fact, those are some of the most powerful words in a leader’s life.

We cannot know everything, but if we are committed to finding the information and passing it back, then we are fulfilling our role as leaders.

When you are faced with questions you cannot answer, you are given a gift. A gift to learn, then to give back. Not only do you become the person your people turn to, but you also become the person who will help them figure it out. You learned, they learned through you and you can take that knowledge forward for the next time.

When you, as the leader, learn, you are expanding your skill set. You are making yourself more valuable to those under your umbrella of responsibility. You, my friend, are becoming inherently curious.

What is it that you would like to know more about?

Use your time to expand and enhance your current skill set to be more effective in the future. Build on your foundation of knowledge and add in the effective sharables that can help those who are challenging you.

It takes discipline, but trust me, it is totally worth it.

Let’s work on your upgrade!
