As the summer travel season kicks off, many of your customers are gearing up for recreational vehicle (RV) adventures powered by propane. These RV adventures are more than a safety concern – they’re opportunities to connect with your customers and enhance your brand as a trusted resource. By proactively educating your customers on propane safety, you can position your business as a knowledgeable and reliable partner. Use these five keys to propane safety in RVs to turn seasonal travelers into lifelong customers.

  • Have propane systems inspected regularly – Invite customers to have your service technicians inspect their propane cylinders and holding mechanisms for any signs of rust, corrosion, fatigue or wear and tear, and inspect their RV propane system.
  • Maintain your propane-operated appliances – Help customers understand the importance of ensuring their supply lines running from appliances to the propane tank are in good condition and not rubbing against any sharp edges or corners.
  • Install and maintain detectors – Ensure customers have at least one Class BC fire extinguisher and operational propane, carbon monoxide and smoke detector in their RV.
  • Check for debris – Educate on the importance of checking exterior vents and clearing any debris, sticks, dust, twigs, insects or other obstructions that may restrict venting.
  • Know the emergency protocols – Make sure customers know what to do if they smell gas: Immediately put out all smoking materials, pilot lights and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances or cellphones. If able, safely turn off the gas supply valve on the cylinder or container. Open all doors and other ventilating openings. Immediately leave the area and call 911 or the local fire department. Before restarting or using any propane appliances, have a qualified service technician inspect the entire system.
