Energy Partners acquires 406 Propane

Energy Partners completed the first acquisition in company history with the purchase of 406 Propane, a neighboring propane retailer in Missoula, Montana.

DeWayne O’Brien, general manager of Energy Partners, says the companies came together not only because they shared the same territory in western Montana but also because of their similar operating structure and shared values.

With the acquisition, Energy Partners gains about 3,700 customers across three locations, a dozen trucks (six bobtails) and four bulk storage tanks. The company also adds about 2 million gallons in sales to reach about 14 million gallons annually.

“We didn’t expand much in terms of footprint – just more concentration,” O’Brien says.

O’Brien praised the Energy Partners team for executing on what he calls “the biggest thing we’ve ever done as a company,” noting the complexities of a software integration.

“We learned a lot along the way,” he adds. “We learned we can do more than we thought we could as a company internally.”

The acquired assets will be helpful to Energy Partners as it continues to expand its territory, with the goal of pushing into eastern Montana, O’Brien says.

Energy Partners is in the process of rebranding 406 Propane, which was established in 2015. The company is sharing information with customers on its website and social media. It also says it’s mailed account packets that contain helpful information and outline next steps for customers.

“Our team is already delivering in your area, and our top priority is making the transition as seamless as possible,” Energy Partners explains on its website. “You can expect the same dependable propane service you’ve always received, now supported by additional resources, local employees and expanded support.”

For Energy Partners, the acquisition comes on the heels of another big project that it completed late last year when it partnered with CHS Inc. on a new wholesale propane rail terminal in Missoula.
