LPG Spotlight: Rack Energy
Artists and musicians new to their crafts can be the most creative. They don’t yet know all the rules, so they’re more likely to break them as they innovate.

In the world of propane, the same might be said of Jesse Rack. He’s relatively new to the industry, and his Rack Energy – which he launched in 2019 as a sister company of Rack Electric in Boca Raton, Florida – has a unique approach. The company not only sells propane, it also sells, installs and repairs propane-powered generators and even installs heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
“Rack is building an ecosystem for the home, where we serve all of our customers’ needs,” Rack says. “For the customer, it’s easy to work with the same contractor for multiple services when you know that our standards are high. It’s easy. One team, one phone call.”
Rack never imagined that he would enter the energy business. His eye was on a pro football career. As a tight end for the University of Buffalo, his Bulls won the 2008 Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship. In 2009, he was named a starter on the MAC all-conference team.
However, Rack was never drafted by a pro team. He attended a New York Jets rookie camp as a free agent, but it didn’t work out. For a while, Rack coached football at Wagner College in Staten Island, New York, then at Florida Atlantic University.
Then something happened that changed Rack’s life. His father John Rack – who established Rack Electric, an electrical contracting company, in 1994 – became sick. The younger Rack was needed at home.
“I looked at myself in the mirror and asked who was going to take care of my family,” Rack says. “In a way, I was having to start over again.”
Rack joined the family business in 2013.
“I said, ‘Dad, if I’m going to do this, I’m not coming on board just to be an electrician,’” Rack says. “’I am coming on board to build an empire and create a brand.’”
Rack Electric started selling propane-powered generators in 2016-17. To the younger Rack, it made sense because generators are always in demand in South Florida due to extreme weather like hurricanes and floods.
Then Rack detected other business opportunities. He began signing customers to service contracts for generator maintenance and repair.
Then, when he heard his customers complain that propane providers were slow to deliver fuel to power newly installed generators, Rack took matters into his own hands and founded Rack Energy, a propane retailer.
Today, Rack Energy has three bobtails filling tanks throughout South Florida. It’s a fertile ground for the business.
“We are having explosive population growth, and there is a ton of new homes and new demand,” Rack says. “We have seen a spike in propane deliveries. A lot of communities don’t have natural gas, and that’s where propane wins.”
