Commentary: On Nov. 28, 2025, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) released $3.7 billion in Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funding to state and tribal governments for fiscal year 2026. The total represents 90 percent of the funding for the fiscal year available under the continuing resolution passed by Congress, with the remaining 10 percent expected for release later in the year, possibly as soon as March. Funds had been delayed during the federal government shutdown late last year.

Congress also passed LIHEAP appropriations with the most recent appropriations bills, with the program receiving a $20 million increase.

According to the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA), LIHEAP helps nearly 6 million low-income U.S. households with their energy bills. The program was a priority of NPGA at last year’s Propane Days.
