Propane Market Metrics: Propane school buses

Commentary: More than 1.3 million students from more than 1,000 school districts nationwide ride to school each day on about 24,000 propane school buses. As of June 2025, Blue Bird had more than 18,000 propane school buses in operation, compared to about 4,000 for IC Corp., 1,600 for Freightliner and four for Ford, according to the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC). These buses are designed to reduce cost, emissions, maintenance and infrastructure, PERC notes.
