Propane retailers talk technology at the Growth Summit
Propane retailers attending the 2025 LP Gas Growth Summit answered this question:
What technologies has your company implemented, or do you plan to implement, to better your operation?

“We’ve gone to electronics in virtually everything. Our vehicles are monitored; our phones are now being answered by artificial intelligence. We’re getting better results and answers from our customers, and the customers seem to be happier rather than having to sit and wait on a phone. It’s really been unique.”
– Stephan Chase, FSi Oil & Propane in Springfield, Massachusetts

“We’re in a remote area, so we have some challenging telemetry needs as far as tank monitors go. I have one customer who needs a sonar monitor, so I’m talking to [one Growth Summit partner] about that. A good chunk of our service area has limited cell service, so we were talking with [another partner] about satellite monitoring. So there’s a lot of different needs in the business, and a lot of the partners have different solutions for you.”
– Josh Schmoll, Mountain View Propane in Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico

“Back in 2015, I was able to establish some business relationships [at the Growth Summit], and it opened my eyes to tank monitoring, and we were able to implement that years ago. And now seeing the advancements of that to the cathodic protection, trying to implement those type things, and then also hearing about the AI technology and seeing how we can use it to become more efficient in our operations.”
– Brandon Hewett, J&J Gas Service in Mayo, Florida
“The [topic of] AI was eye-opening to me. We’ve dabbled in it a little bit, but just hearing the panel [address it at the Growth Summit with] suggestions and things that they use, I feel like that’s something that we’ll go back home and probably investigate and look into.”
– Brittany Hewett, J&J Gas Service in Mayo, Florida

“We use technology across the board as a tool. In the back office, it helps us scan, read and do our accounting on an invoice-by-invoice basis. On the front end, our customers use it on our website to engage in chat with us or to communicate with text messaging. We use tank monitors and fully integrated software. We no longer use paper in our business. So we’re using technology to be efficient and to serve our customers better.”
– Christopher Caywood, Caywood Propane Gas, with several locations in Michigan

“One of the areas is tank monitoring, which we’ve done for quite a few years, but the technology keeps changing. GPS has been nice for us to locate the trucks [so] we can direct them more efficiently.”
– Stephen Miller, American Distributing Co. in Marysville, Washington

“Apps that allow our drivers and service techs to fill out leak test forms, safety maintenance [documentation], DOT recerts. It just allows [them] to be more efficient, quicker and [use] less paperwork.”
– Casey Dell, American Distributing Co. in Marysville, Washington

“Tank monitoring is huge. Not only do we use monitoring for the benefit of our customers and being able to service them better, [but] we use it more specifically internally to control inventory.”
– Ryan Brewer, Scott Petroleum in Itta Bena, Mississippi

“Monitoring was big. Changing over to back-office software. Switching over to electronic ticketing was a big one. We were still handwriting tickets just a couple of years ago.”
– Tammy Scribner, Premier Propane in Webster, Minnesota

“Technology at Propane Ninja is constantly changing. That’s probably one of our biggest milestones right now that we’re trying to reach is a better, technologically advanced company that meets customer expectations but also helps with our efficiencies. And now with some AI enhancement, you’re starting to see that technology can make the workplace as a whole more efficient, where your administrative staff can now use technology to make their jobs more efficient, as well.”
– Mike Dodd, Propane Ninja in Plant City, Florida
