Pros4Care plans 16th golf benefit for prostate cancer awareness
The 16th annual Pros4Care Golf Benefit supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) will be held Sept. 9 at Watters Creek Golf Course in Plano, Texas.
Pros4Care, a nonprofit supporting awareness and education of prostate cancer, was founded in 2006 by propane industry members Ed Varney, owner of Top Line Management; Pat Hyland of the Propane Education & Research Council and formerly of LP Gas magazine; and Bill Powers, formerly of Heritage Propane.
Its goal is to save lives through education and resources. Funds raised through the golf benefit help find new treatments that extend life and improve the quality of life, the organization says.
Over the past 15 years, Pros4Care has raised more than $300,000 for the cause and has supported a dozen propane industry members who received a prostate cancer diagnosis, says Varney.
“We are proud to make this cause our mission,” he says. “This event not only generates dollars for research. Every participant becomes more aware of the need for early and annual screening. Our goal is to spread the word about getting checked at 50 years old. Early detection saves lives.”
According to the PCF, one in eight men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. In 2024, more than 299,000 U.S. men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 35,000 will die from the disease.
