2019 LP Gas Top Propane Retailer rankings

Our annual listing of the largest retail propane companies in the United States, measured by 2018 gallon sales, along with the people who lead and manage them

While this year’s LP Gas Top Propane Retailer rankings have a familiar feel, with AmeriGas, Ferrellgas and Suburban Propane holding the top three spots, respectively, several significant changes have taken place over the last year that impact our latest rankings of the largest U.S. retail propane companies.

The big shake-up happened midway through 2018 when NGL Energy Partners completed its exit from retail propane by selling the remaining portion of that business, in the eastern United States, to Superior Plus Corp. for $900 million. Six months prior to that deal, NGL Energy Partners sold propane operations across 10 states in the midcontinent and western portions of the United States to European company DCC LPG for $200 million.

So, as you’ll see, NGL Energy Partners, the sixth-largest propane retailer last year, no longer holds a spot in the rankings. Meanwhile, Superior Plus, with a focus on the retail propane market, is surging. Its U.S. propane operations, based in Rochester, New York, and known as Superior Plus Propane, made a significant leap, from No. 14 last year to that No. 6 spot, behind agricultural cooperative giants Growmark and CHS.

Interestingly, DCC’s first appearance in the rankings comes at that No. 14 spot, which Superior Plus held last year.

Also of note this year, ThompsonGas cracked the top 10 with a significant bump in gallon sales. The Frederick, Maryland-based company went from 59.2 million gallons in 2017 to its 86.2 million gallons in 2018. It made six acquisitions during the year.
