Direct-injection engine project moves forward

February 26, 2015 By

The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) approved a $600,000 funding request to help move Icom North America‘s direct-injection on-road vehicle engine through the emissions certification process. The docket, titled “JTGhp High Pressure Liquid Propane Direct Injection System,” was passed during the council’s Feb. 19 conference call.

According to PERC, the goal is to attain certifications from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board.

Vehicle OEMs are moving to direct injection technology because of the improvements it provides for horsepower, emissions and fuel economy, says Tucker Perkins, PERC’s chief business development officer. Propane autogas can provide those benefits and more when used with this technology, Perkins adds.

The Ford F-150 pickup and Taurus sedan will feature the Ford 3.5-liter Ecoboost engine.
