PERC: Propane equipment solves financial, logistical challenges
The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) is touting propane’s advantage in pricing, immediacy and resilience for port operations. Earlier this year, it showcased three pieces of propane-powered equipment at the Breakbulk Americas show in Houston.

Caterpillar propane generator – This unit delivers reliable, propane-powered generation for facilities, remote applications and EV charging, enabling operators to rapidly add clean capacity without waiting on delayed or costly utility grid upgrades, according to PERC. Propane can be stored on-site, providing a dependable alternative to traditional diesel generation.
Capacity TJ 9000 propane terminal tractor – This yard truck is designed for maximum uptime and powered by the propane PSI 8.8-liter engine, offering a 25 percent lower fuel spend. From the one-piece structural steel frame to the interior of the all-steel cab, the TJ 9000 is engineered to meet the needs of big jobs. This yard truck is ideal for extra-heavy-duty applications and is capable of a gross combined vehicle weight rating of up to 180,000 pounds, PERC notes. In addition, the Capacity DURA-RIDE independent rear air spring suspension provides a smooth ride that protects operators and equipment.
Caterpillar GP50CN propane forklift – The GP50CN is a heavy-duty, internal combustion pneumatic-tire propane forklift designed for demanding industrial, construction and port operations. It delivers consistent power throughout the shift without charging downtime, offering competitive total cost of ownership and avoiding expensive charging infrastructure or battery room additions. Manufactured by Logisnext Americas, the forklift offers 5-ton lift capacity and 30 percent lower upfront cost than electric, PERC adds.
