Owner and Operator
Humble beginnings
Prior to creating his own propane company – Romero’s Rio Grande Propane in Taos, New Mexico – Romero worked his way up in the industry. At first, he served a nearby propane company as a delivery driver. From there, he was hired as a service technician, a position he held until another propane retailer offered him a district manager role.
After a few years, he decided to create his own business, which he still oversees to this day. Highly passionate about propane, Romero will likely continue to operate the business for years to come, as his desire to serve others remains as fervent as ever.
A family-oriented company
Romero’s dedication to leadership is apparent at his company, where he leads six employees. With Romero remaining focused on his roots, Romero’s Rio Grande Propane is located on the same property where his grandfather began an auto repair and towing service shop in 1932. Not to mention, all of his employees – aside from one – are family members.
“I’d like to see my sons eventually take over the business and continue to provide excellent service to northern New Mexico’s communities. Between my children and grandchildren, I believe the company’s success will continue for many years to come.”
An incredible honor
Due to Romero’s decades-long association with the propane industry and the positive impact he’s had on New Mexico, he received a rare honor this past June. A statewide proclamation, signed by New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, declares June 20 as “Billy Romero Day.”
“I was very surprised. It is my understanding that I am the first propane company owner nationwide to be recognized by a governor. I was also extremely honored to be presented with the proclamation by Clay Bailey, superintendent of the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department.”
Selfless contributions
The proclamation mentions that Romero “selflessly contributed many years towards various causes, organizations and initiatives, making a profound and lasting impact on the lives of New Mexicans.” It states that he has “demonstrated exceptional leadership, compassion and generosity, improving the quality of life for New Mexicans.”
As an example of his selflessness, Romero assisted a propane retailer in northern New Mexico during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, the retailer was unable to fulfill its customers’ needs, which had risen exponentially – a direct result of the virus. Aside from the pandemic, the retailer was also encountering severe weather, so Romero stepped up and offered delivery assistance, even though he was located nearly two hours away.
While looking back on those days, he was honored to be involved. He’s committed to continuously assisting other people.
“I never volunteered for any recognition. I was called for assistance and will always do anything possible to help as much as I can.”
This commitment to assisting others has been evident for years. Romero has served his state as a member of the New Mexico National Guard. He’s been involved as a member of local- and state-level volunteer boards, commissions and committees, including the Taos Planning and Zoning Commission.
Not only has he served as former president of the New Mexico Oil & Gas Association, but currently he is chairman of New Mexico’s Construction Industries Commission, as he represents the liquefied petroleum gas industry.
Hobbies
When Romero isn’t helping other propane companies, serving volunteer boards, commissions and committees, or overseeing his family-centered business, he can often be found camping with his family and friends. Lately, he’s picked up a new hobby: golf.
Both hobbies provide him opportunities to relax and reflect on his company and industry, to which he remains fully dedicated.
“My company, as well as our industry, will continue to be crucial for American citizens. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!”
