The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) presented the Mesa (Ariz.) Public Schools with this year’s Propane Autogas Fleet award at the Green Fleet Conference & Expo in Phoenix. The award recognizes an autogas fleet for its leadership in turning to the alternative fuel. Mesa Public Schools is the first school district to receive the award.

According to a press release, Mesa Public Schools operates the largest school bus fleet in Arizona and has converted 89 of its 517 buses to autogas. The autogas fleet transports thousands of students each day, and in 2013 displaced 198,813 gallons of diesel. Mesa Public Schools says it saves $6,500 in annual fuel costs per bus compared with diesel. In addition, Mesa Public Schools has set a goal to become the first district in the United States to run an all-autogas bus fleet.
