Ray Murray Sr. had to quit his job to start Ray Murray Inc (RMI). This decision was a significant one…he had dedicated 25 years to a propane equipment manufacturer. He also had a growing family. But he knew he could do better. Especially in the exceedingly important area of customer service.

More than 30 years later, and now with President and CEO Michael Hopsicker in place, sons Ray III, Jim and John Murray now spend even more time working more closely than ever with customers and living the early words of their father, including: “The customer is always right,” and “If you aren’t helping a customer, be sure you’re helping someone who is.”

Ray Murray Inc. stocks and sells products from the biggest and best names in propane equipment, hearth and heating units, products for plants and bobtails, fill stations and transports, grills and outdoor living products and compressed gas equipment. Three warehouses totaling over 180,000 square feet include centers for customer service and technical support.

Complete customer care may best describe the growing list of value-added services the company provides as well as the professional, helpful and proactive environment in which business is shared together. From order to shipping, usually in the same day, helpful RMI people await at every turn. The voices of the company are not only friendly but also exceedingly knowledgeable of many, many of the more than 20,000 products offered.

Technical support regularly differentiates RMI from other distributors in many product specialties. It is not uncommon for an RMI technical specialist to talk an installer through a knotty project even in the middle of a person’s living room. Professional training seminars on products, installations and applications are offered throughout the year and at the annual Open House & Trade Show typically attracting more than 1,000 Customers, suppliers and staff to the company’s main location in Lee, Mass.

For nearly a decade, Ray Murray Inc. has offered Online Ordering via a password-protected Internet site. Participating customers may order and also check inventory, pricing and status of orders from the same RMI Online Ordering site.

In October 2007 RMI acquired NRG, a distributor of Hearth and Grill products, located in Flint, Mich. This acquisition highlights RMI’s continuing commitment to its operation in two areas. First, to the acquisition of a Midwest shipping location and second, to its commitment to the Hearth and Leisure channel. The 40,000-square-foot Flint, Mich., warehouse location also allows RMI to stock LP, plant and compressed gas equipment closer to their rapidly growing Midwest customer base. Coupled with the expansion of its outside sales group to 15 people RMI continues to commit resources to growing its presence and service levels in the markets it serves.

Available for customer and trade events is the RMI Mobile Hearth Showroom featuring products from Lexington Forge, Monessen, Majestic, Rinnai and Breckwell. Frequently a grill from Firemagic, Twin Eagles, Vermont Castings or Beefeater accompanies the Mobile Showroom.

At the core of the company are people – the vast majority joined RMI over a decade ago and many are past their 20- and 30-year marks. The company has always been dedicated to finding the best people, training them, challenging them and keeping them. And that dedication to staff consistency ensures complete customer care as an everyday occurrence.
