From banking to propane

Gerwitz has “done it all” across more than 30 years in the propane industry. She started as a customer service representative at AmeriGas’ Holbrook, Arizona, location in 1994. She had been working part time at a bank but entered the propane industry full time after literally switching jobs with a friend, who sought part-time work after having a baby. In addition to answering phones, Gerwitz filled propane bottles on the dock, painted tanks and even earned her commercial driver’s license. “I became a problem solver for them,” she says.

‘You can do anything’

Asked what roles she would recommend to others who are developing their skills in the propane industry, Gerwitz says, “Day-to-day [roles], where you’re talking to drivers and service techs and talking to customers. The operations side is huge. If you learn how to deal in that world, you can do anything.”

Staying put

Gerwitz recalls a time when she was one of the few women working in the propane industry. “I was fine with that,” she says. “You had to roll with it or get out. If you tried to buck the system at that point, you just weren’t going to go anywhere.” Gerwitz says staying in the industry has provided her with a fulfilling career and “a great living” for her family.

Mentors

Gerwitz has thrived in the propane industry by learning from her mentors, including Gene Bissell, Bob Roseler and Rufus Goodwin at AmeriGas. “Gene Bissell was the most awesome man I’ve ever met,” she says. “He was great about promoting people who wanted to grow and learn.” Gerwitz says that Bissell encouraged employees to get involved in the state and national associations. “That’s how I got involved on the association side,” she says. Leaders like Charlie Ory gave her the confidence to take on roles outside her comfort zone.

Volunteer roles

Gerwitz is a longtime volunteer with the Arizona Propane Gas Association and the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA). She’s on the NPGA board of directors, serving as a services section director on the insurance side, and chairs the scholarship committee. She also serves on the advisory board for the Better Business Bureau in Arizona.

Hobbies

Family, golf and work make up Gerwitz’s life. She enjoys spending time with her son, daughter and her two granddaughters. She admits to being a “workaholic” but says, “It’s a good life.”
