August 2023: Household propane consumption
Commentary: According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey, 9 percent of U.S. households use propane for at least one residential application, excluding outdoor grilling. Propane’s residential presence isn’t evenly distributed across the country. It ranges from a high of 39 percent of households in Vermont to a low of 4 percent in Illinois and New Jersey. Propane is used as a primary heating fuel in 4.2 percent of U.S. households, with a high of 16 percent in North Dakota and a low of 2 percent in Arizona, California and Texas. Three percent of U.S. households use propane for water heating, with a high of 20 percent in Vermont to a low of 1 percent in Florida.
