LPG Spotlight: L.G. Jordan Oil & Gas
As Amy Jordan Dean, president of L.G. Jordan Oil & Gas Co. in Apex, North Carolina, reflects on the propane retailer’s 100th anniversary this year, she believes its success is associated with two primary capabilities. First, it has consistently adapted to change. And second, it always embraces any opportunities it receives.
“The world has changed, our local communities have changed, and we have weathered through [the changes] and succeeded,” she says.
L.G. Jordan has embraced opportunities on an internal and external basis over the years. Internally, the propane retailer has expanded its service capabilities, as it also distributes diesel fuel, fuel oil and gasoline to residential and commercial customers. A propane tank and propane and natural gas line installer, it also sells and installs propane and natural gas appliances such as grills, heaters and tankless water heaters.
Serving a seven-county area and about 4,500 customers, L.G. Jordan plans to grow its installation, sales and service departments, and increase its delivery services. The retailer is also planning to expand its product lineup, services and market area, and boost its employee headcount, all under fifth-generation co-owner Carl Dean’s leadership.
“Carl has pushed our rebranding efforts, enhanced our marketing programs and exposure, and worked with our team on technological advances since joining the company three years ago,” Amy Jordan Dean emphasizes.
Although the company’s internal enhancements are substantial, its impact on others – outside of the company – has especially stood out in recent years.
For starters, L.G. Jordan has contributed financially to Apex-area organizations, including churches, fire departments, police departments and schools.
It has also contributed to the Apex Skate Park, Halle Cultural Arts Center, Kidstown Playground and Western Wake Crisis Ministry. Not to mention, it financially supports the Apex Lions Club, Apex Rotary Club and YMCA of the Triangle as well, while also volunteering with them.
Aside from its philanthropic endeavors, the company is involved with various associations, including the Apex Chamber of Commerce, as three generations of owners have served as presidents. Additionally, co-owner Larry Jordan has served as the North Carolina Petroleum and Convenience Marketers Association’s president.
On a national basis, two present owners are actively involved with the Southeast Propane Alliance. Furthermore, Amy Jordan Dean is the North Carolina state director for the National Propane Gas Association board of directors.
When it comes to leadership capacities, two past owners have formerly served as Apex’s mayor, while Larry Jordan has served in the North Carolina House of Representatives. Moreover, Amy Jordan Dean is a former North Carolina Propane Gas Association president.
“As a family-owned business with three generations still involved, our employees know we care about them, as we’re all family,” she says. “Our care for others has been noticed outside of our company too, as evidenced by our involvement through charities, leadership roles and volunteer opportunities.”
She adds, “By giving back, we have deep roots in our communities – roots that will continue to develop.”
