Market pointers
⦁ Maine has the highest usage of fuel oil in the country, says Leslie Anderson of the Propane Gas Association of New England, with 70 percent of all homes fueled by heating oil. As a result, the state’s propane industry has seen gallon growth where homeowners are choosing to convert heating oil to propane.
⦁ Maine has not seen industry-threatening bills come through its legislature as other states have. According to Anderson, the state has been primarily focused on budgetary and social equity issues and less so on the environment.
⦁ Maine’s residential and commercial markets for propane drive the majority of gallon sales, with residential making up 52 percent of the state’s total sales and commercial making up 44 percent. The state’s cold temperatures and vast rural areas are favorable for the expansion of propane demand, according to the Propane Education & Research Council.
⦁ Dead River Co. is one of the state’s prominent propane retailers with a wide footprint of locations across Maine. The company has completed several acquisitions over recent years. Dead River Co. was also named a 2021 LP Gas Top Propane Retailer.
