Ray Murray Sr. had to quit his job to start Ray Murray Inc. (RMI) This decision was a significant one – he had devoted 25 years to a propane equipment manufacturer. He also had a growing family.

But he knew he could do it better. Especially in the exceedingly important area of Customer Service.

Over 30 years later, and now with President and CEO Michael Hopsicker in place, sons Ray III, Jim and John Murray now spend even more time working more closely than ever with Customers and living the early words of their father, including “The Customer is always right” and “If you aren’t helping a Customer, be sure you are helping someone who is.”

Ray Murray Inc. stocks and sells products from the biggest and best names in propane equipment, hearth and heating units, products for plants, bobtails, fill stations & transports, grills & outdoor living products and compressed gas equipment. Warehouses totaling over 150,000 square feet include centers for Customer Service and Technical Support.

Complete Customer Care may best describe the growing list of value-added services the company provides as well as the professional, helpful and proactive environment in which business is shared together. From order to shipping, usually in the same day, helpful RMI people await at every turn. The voices of the company are not only friendly but also exceedingly knowledgeable of many, many of the nearly 20,000 products offered.

Technical Support regularly differentiates Ray Murray Inc. from other distributors in many product specialties. It is not uncommon for an RMI technical specialist to talk an installer through a knotty project even in the middle of a homeowner’s living room! Professional training seminars on products, installations and applications are offered throughout the year and at the annual Open House & Trade Show typically attracting more than 1,000 Customers and suppliers and staff to the company’s main location in Lee, Mass.

For nearly a decade, Ray Murray Inc. has offered Online Ordering in a password-protected Internet site. Participating Customers may order and also check inventory, pricing and status of orders from the same RMI Online Ordering site.

In the Fall of 2006 RMI acquired the Midwest assets of Illinois-based McTier Supply Co., a longtime supplier of LP gas equipment. This acquisition allows RMI to better service its growing number of Midwest customers. Coupled with the expansion of its outside sales group to 13 people and the addition of two inside sales people, RMI continues to commit resources to growing its presence and service level in the markets it serves.

Available for customer and trade events is the RMI Mobile Hearth & Heating Showroom featuring products from Lexington Forge, Monessen, Majestic, White Mountain Hearth/Empire Comfort System, R. H. Peterson, Rasmussen, Rinnai Reznor and Detroit Radiant. Frequently a grill from Beefeater, Vermont Castings or Camp Chef accompanies the RMI Mobile Showroom, as does a Mosquito Magnet.

At the core of the company are people – the vast majority joined Ray Murray Inc. over a decade ago and many are at or near the 20-and 30-year marks. The company has always been dedicated to finding the best people, training them, challenging them and keeping them.
