U-Haul launched a refillable 1-pound propane cylinder, designed with campers and tailgaters in mind, in California. The company launched the cylinders as part of a sustainability push by the California Product Stewardship Council, whose “Refuel Your Fun” campaign asks Californians to switch from disposables to the refillables. The propane cylinders, manufactured by Flame King, can be used to fuel portable grills, small stoves, portable heaters, lanterns and more. In addition, the cylinders will offer savings for campers and tailgaters who previously used disposables, U-Haul reports. The propane cylinders are available in two shapes: a tall, skinny tank and a shorter tank. A new U-Haul refillable costs $11,95, and refills are $1.95. According to the company, the propane cylinders will be available nationwide at U-Haul-owned-and-operated stores that supply propane, as well as U-Haul dealers who have propane certifications.

We fill propane bottles at our site, but nothing less than 5 gallons. What kind of adaptors are needed to fill a bottle this size?

    • U-Haul says its refillable 1-pound propane cylinders are not filled by pump and motor from a traditional dispenser. They are gravity-filled with a forklift tank. Only trained and certified U-Haul system members can fill its 1-pound cylinders.
