Podcasting in propane: 4 questions to ask before starting a podcast

A podcast can begin with a simple idea and a conversation – it doesn’t have to be complicated.

At least that’s what Jessica Johnson says about the formation of the Women in Propane Council’s (WIP) podcast, “Through the Leadership Lens.”

She recalls the idea of a podcast blossoming while in Nashville, Tennessee, for the 2022 Southeastern Convention & International Propane Expo and attending the WIP Leadership Forum.

“The decision to start was pretty easy because the podcast is just something that was missing, a perspective in the industry that a lot of people would benefit from hearing,” says Johnson, the external communications manager for ThompsonGas and chair of the WIP Communication & Marketing Committee.

Wondering whether to start a podcast? Here are some questions to ask:

1. How do I choose who speaks on the podcast? Finding dynamic voices from whom listeners want to hear will keep people coming back.

Johnson says the stars aligned when she received WIP founder and LP Gas Hall of Famer Nancy Coop’s blessing to kick-start the podcast and approached Bridget Kidd of the Propane Education & Research Council and Freddie Ridler of Rural Computer Consultants to serve as the hosts.

Focusing on different propane perspectives, the team brings a variety of guests on the podcast. It is also accepting nominations for potential guests.

2. What will the podcast be about? Choosing topics that inform and educate listeners is key and can showcase the hosts or guests as experts.

Johnson says the aim of the WIP podcast is to “amplify voices, share different perspectives, have some fun, offer advice on leadership to those who may not have leadership to turn to, and just being a good resource.”

“Leadership is for everyone,” she adds. “It’s not a title; it’s really a state of mind and it’s a practice. We all have something to learn from each other.”

3. What tools are needed to begin? Starting a podcast doesn’t have to cost a lot. Johnson says there was a small initial investment in editing software. But otherwise, a computer and microphone will do the job and can always be upgraded later.

“Technology is just so amazing right now; it’s really easy to get good quality audio,” she says.

Looking for partners to help support the podcast can help cover any costs. Johnson says “Through the Leadership Lens” is supported by the WIP Council, the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) and sponsored by Irish Propane.

“I’m really grateful to WIP and NPGA for taking a chance on the project and for all the support,” Johnson says. “I believe that we are building an asset to the industry, and it’s been really rewarding. And we’re just getting started.”

4. What will the podcast’s schedule be? Depending on the timeliness of the discussions, podcast episodes can be recorded and edited in advance. Johnson says “Through the Leadership Lens” releases a new episode every three weeks.

A consistent schedule keeps the audience coming back to listen to new content.

“Everyone’s so busy. We want to keep the podcast fun and manageable,” Johnson says. “We don’t want it to feel like a job.”
